Noorani Qaida vs Noor Al-Bayan: which is better for beginners?

Both books have one goal: teaching a beginner to read Arabic letters well enough to read the Quran. They take slightly different roads to get there.

What the Noorani Qaida is

The Noorani Qaida is a classic primer used around the world. It moves through the letters, their shapes when joined, the short and long vowels, sukoon, shaddah and tanween, then into short words and phrases from the Quran. Its lessons are compact, so motivated students can move quickly.

What Noor Al-Bayan is

Noor Al-Bayan is a newer method built around very small steps and lots of repetition. Each lesson adds a little and practices it many times, which suits young children and learners who need more confidence.

Which one should your child use?

  • Ages 4–6: Noor Al-Bayan’s small steps often work well.
  • Ages 7 and up: the Noorani Qaida usually moves faster.
  • Adults: either works; many prefer the Noorani Qaida’s pace.
  • Started one already? Finish it. Switching halfway rarely helps.

How long does it take?

It depends on age and how often your child has class. With three short classes a week and a few minutes of practice at home, many children finish within a few months.

What comes next

After the primer, your child starts reading from the Quran itself, usually the short surahs, with Tajweed corrected along the way.

The book matters less than the teacher. A patient teacher who corrects every sound will get your child reading with either one.
